Powwow

Several years ago, I made friends with a young Native American dancer and his family. Through them, I researched traditional dances, regalia, and powwow history. For two summers, I attended East Coast powwows with them, taking photographs, and meeting more people enjoying and continuing their traditional culture. This book follows Little Man through a typical powwow day, and features my photographs of him, his family, his friends, and the color and excitement of the event. Step into the powwow circle, and join the dancing! (Ages 8 and up)

“By centering this volume on an actual child at a Wampanoag powwow, Greene is able to relate many details and describe the event in a personal way. The attractively organized book is filled with full-color photographs. Fact boxes are interspersed throughout to highlight various subjects, from jingle dresses to powwow manners. A useful glossary is appended, along with online sources.” School Library Journal, Feb. 1, 1999
